What is corrosion?

It is the natural enemy of metals. Common steels react with the environment forming an iron oxide surface layer. This layer is extremely porous and allows a continuous oxidation of the steel, thus producing corrosion, which is commonly known as "rust". The passive layer (reaction between stainless steel alloy elements and water) protects the stainless steel against corrosion.
