For some sectors (medicine and food for example), electropolishing the insides of steel components, such as manifold pipes, is very important.
Electropolishing exalts the resistance characteristics of steel and acts very effectively on roughness, so it is the perfect solution for guaranteeing smoothness standards, and as such the hygiene levels required for specific applications.
Electropolishing manifold pipes in a way that improves the functional characteristics of their inner surface, though, requires specific technical skills and a suitable electropolishing system.
The first element to consider is the frame that supports the manifold during processing, essential for obtaining a good end result.
When the component is immersed in the galvanizing bath it becomes like a Faraday cage, so a steel stick is used to help coat it internally. The stick acts as a cathode, and must always remain at the same distance from the component walls. Each component is hand-mounted on the frame, which must be tailor-made to guarantee an optimal position in the tank.
The process for reaching the roughness level indicated by the client is programmed with the same precision. The piece is studied, a polishing test is done, and the current density and required immersion times are established. With these indications, treatment uniformity is guaranteed for every piece in the same lot, and even in the event of subsequent supplies of the same article.
Inner electropolishing also requires a high voltage power supply, and a system that can keep the temperature constant during treatment. Our electropolishing system has cooling cycles that allow it to work continually without suffering, making it undeniably productive.
Mondeo’s electropolishing system can treat open-end manifold pipes and cylindrical pieces that are up to 1000 mm long and with an outer diameter of from 31 to 76 mm.
